France's Effort to Spawn a New Google
I'm sorry but Chirac is as good as coming up with new web projects as he is good with managing his own government...you don't pull up the leading companies' champions, you need fresh blood, younger and bolder ideas.
And to start with, you come up with a good name, how lame is Quaero? No one will ever get it right...laaaame!!!

Gmail grows 114%, Hotmail just 16%
Microsoft is shying away from the 10-year-old name and hoping to freshen up its image as services such as Google's Gmail creep up on its market share...well, tough!
It takes an outsider to shake an old crumbling giant and I guess that Microsoft can only experience rebirth from its ashes....I used Hotmail for some time in 1998 but quickly had to drop it, it was such a pain to use. I found other webmailed services like orange.net and ecosse.net which were underground for sure but very easy to use, until Google launched Gmail! It changed my experience with email straight away and there is not a day when I don't access gmail, well, unless I am on hols on a remote beach.
Google got it right like many things they do, hands on experience with dedicated and smart people...I am not saying MS don't hire the same people, I am sure they can afford to beat the competition on that level, but there is a lack of...belief maybe?
I guess when you're an outsider its easier to come up against the best, when you're at the top, its just easier to watch the competition come and tickle you...until you're gobbed!
